Heyfield is located on the Thompson River, 206 kilometres east of Melbourne, within the Wellington Shire Council district. It is seen as a gateway to the Alpine National Park and Victorian High Country. The Alpine National Park stretches from central Gippsland, all the way to the New South Wales Border, where it adjoins Kosciuszko National Park. Heyfield was established in the early 1840s, where an early settler described the district as resembling ‘a field of waving corn’ and it was from this the name Hayfield was coined. The town further developed as a stopping point for prospectors en route to the Gippsland goldfields. Today, Heyfield relies upon dairy, timber and tourism industries for its prosperity. It is the principal source of hardwood in Victoria and is home to one of the largest timber mills in the southern hemisphere.

Those visiting Heyfield can field short-term parking at the old Gordon St Reserve, on the corner of Macfarlane & Clark Streets. A donation is required to park here and stays are limited to 48 hours. Visitors also have access to a dump point and potable water at the reserve. Maffra Golf Club & Sale Showground offers visitors extended parking for up to 28 days, at a cost of $15 per vehicle per night.

When visiting Heyfield, there is an abundance of water sport activities on offer, including and not limited to, boating, swimming, sailing, skiing and fishing. For land based activities, the town offers an excellent bike trail along the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail, as well as stunning historical buildings such as Victorian Timber Workers Memorial and St Michael's Roman Catholic Church to explore.
