Springsure is located 66km south of Emerald on the Gregory Highway. Overlooking the town is the unusual escarpment range, Mt Zamia. On the eastern side of the range is Virgin Rock, acquiring its name from the weathered likeness of the Virgin Mary holding her child, depicted in the niche of the rock. Take a drive out to the Lions Park, on the northern side of town, to view this breathtaking sight lit up at night. The Bauhinia Shire has one of the highest percentages of National Parks of any Shire in Queensland.
Those visiting Springsure can find short-term parking for up to 24 hours at Virgin Rock Rest Area, located along the Gregory Hwy. Potable water and a dump point are both located at the showgrounds.
Minerva Hills, just 10 minutes’ drive from Springsure, overlooks the town, offering spectacular views from several lookouts. Carnarvon is the most popular inland National Park featuring sandstone gorges, crystal clear streams and plenty of ferns, palms and trees. The Staircase Range was built in the 1880s by the Chinese to service the new settlements of the area and is a testament to the pioneering spirit of early road builders. With so many national parks to explore, Springsure is the place to make your base and experience the amazing natural beauty of the region.
