St Arnaud - VIC RVFT

St Arnaud is located in the Wimmera region of Victoria, 244 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and is situated within the Shire of the Northern Grampians. The districts around St Arnaud support an agricultural industry of grains and wineries, sheep grazing, with open Mallee plains to the north and forested areas to the south. This former gold mining town was first settled in the mid-1850s and was originally known as ‘New Bendigo Goldfield’ before being renamed St Arnaud in honour of the commander of the French Forces in the Crimean War – Jaques Leroy de St Arnaud, Marshal of France. Many of the streets are also named after British military leaders involved in the same war.

St Arnaud Caravan Park is the ideal location to stop while you explore this unique town; close to the town centre with all facilities provided, including potable water. A dump point is only a short distance away located at Lord Nelson Park.

St Arnaud is a great place to visit, especially for RV travellers. Be sure to explore the historic precinct along Napier Street, featuring Victoria’s oldest fire station which has been converted into a fire brigade museum, a post office erected on 1 February 1856 and an old court house. For a pleasant day trip, take a drive 23 kilometres south of St Arnaud and you will run into the small community of Stuarts Mill where gold was first discovered in 1861. The town has preserved some of the older buildings and churches from earlier mining days.
