Jeparit is situated on the Wimmera River in western Victoria, 370 kilometres from Melbourne. The town services the surrounding agricultural area with wheat, wool, barley and oats. Jeparit is also the birth place of Australia’s longest serving Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, and a town square has been established to commemorate his legacy.
Near Jeparit lies the largest freshwater lake in Victoria, Lake Hindmarsh. Four Mile Beach, on the southern shore, is a great spot for fishing, swimming and boating. RV travellers can camp here for a nominal fee, payable to the council. The dump point and potable water are located on Lower Roy Street.
While in town, be sure to visit the Wimmera-Mallee Pioneer Museum, one of the best of its type in Australia. The museum contains an extensive historical farming machinery display and several buildings relating to the colonial era. Jeparit has significant wetlands in the area with a diverse bird population. The nearby Birdcage Flora and Fauna Reserve is also well worth visiting.
