Meckering is located 130 kilometres east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway. Originally settled in 1887 when the town was named Beebering, it was later renamed to Meckering, with an Aboriginal meaning of “place of water”. In 1968 Meckering was devastated by a major earthquake, which almost completely demolished the town. Whilst there are no original buildings remaining, a memorial rose garden has been established to signify the historical event.
Overnight RV parking is available at the Meckering Memorial Park on Gabbedy Place, free of charge. A dump point, potable water, toilets, bins and covered seating are provided, and pets are permitted on leads.
While visiting Meckering, be sure to stop in at the Salisbury Farmhouse Ruins to see the homestead preserved in its ruined state following the earthquake. Also within town is the ‘Big SLR Camera’, which makes a great ‘photo’ stop.
