Latrobe - Tasmania RVFT

Latrobe once a bustling port is located on the banks of the Mersey River in north-west Tasmania. This historical town refl ects a relaxing atmosphere with a friendly and welcoming ambience. Latrobe won the Tidy Towns Award in 2012 and the locals take pride in this along with a reputation of a very low vandalism rate. The council encourages community based volunteer contributions and this is reflected in the attitude of the town.

Latrobe has an abundance of places to visit and things to see. The Tourist Information Centre (TIC) located in Bells Parade has a wide range of brochures and material to help you explore the region. Dont forget to book your tours and pick up your souvenirs. The TIC is open 7 days with free parking available. For the history buffs there are 75 heritage listed buildings within the town such as the Courthouse Museum and Sherwood Hall. The House of Anvers is just the place for all you chocoholics with chocolate tasting every day of the week from 7am 5pm.

Some of the wonderful walks to enjoy in the area include Dooleys Hill and the Sheean Walk a tree lined stroll with plaques along the way depicting contributions Australians made during various confl icts. The Warrawee Forest Reserve meanders along the banks of the Mersey River. Many of these areas have picnic and barbeque facilities where a relaxing lunch can be enjoyed. The Latrobe Landcare Group conduct platypus tours of this area early morning or at dusk is the best time to catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

Eating out is varied with everything from pubs and hotels to cafes and takeaways. The Cherry Shed is open all year round with a cafe menu based on cherries as well as many other cherry products.

Gilbert Street is also the home to many antique and craft shops and dont forget to drop into the Cheyne Purdue Gallery featuring the works of the Cheyne Purdue Art School. The Latrobe outdoor markets operate every Sunday from 9.30am to 2pm and are located opposite the Memorial Hall. It is a great place for a browse and to pick up a bargain.

Latrobes population of around 3500 are very proud of their town and are only too willing to welcome you and show you the sights. A peaceful stopover on your journey across the top of Tasmania.
