Roxby Downs located north of Port Augusta and is the largest town in South Australia. With a population of nearly 5,000 it has all the retail, recreation and health facilities a traveller would require. As a regional hub it is the perfect place to rest and restock supplies before heading into the outback. The town was purpose built to accommodate mine workers and their families from the Olympic Dam Mine. The Olympic Dam Mine is located 16 kilometres from Roxby Downs and has the world’s fourth largest copper and gold deposits and the world’s largest uranium deposits. The Mine also produces significant quantities of silver. Roxby Downs is well known as an oasis in the desert with wide tree lined streets, excellent amenities and lots of greenery. The town was built in 1988 and has maintained modern, well-kept facilities.

The BP Station located in the hub of Roxby Downs offers visitors potable water, a dump point, and free extended parking. The main street is the focus of retail and cultural activity in Roxby Downs; a grassed median strip is situated on Main Street with shaded park benches and tables suitable for picnics - a very popular spot for locals and visitors alike. BHP Billiton funded an Arid Recovery Reserve, where rabbits, cats and foxes have been eradicated to make way for native animals, including the bilby, western barred bandicoot, and many others. Tag along night tours are on offer and certainly make for an interesting excursion, second to none.

Roxby Downs offers everything from swimming, golf and tennis to squash and bowls. Roxby Downs Cultural Precinct is a must, featuring the town’s visitor information centre, an outback cinema, art gallery, auditorium and the Dunes Café.
