Evandale is a small town in Tasmania, located 18km south of Launceston. The town is set on a ridge overlooking fertile agricultural, grazing lands and the South Esk River. The irregular streets and quaint architecture found in Evandale recollect colonial village life long past. Evandale was originally settled as a military post in 1811. After various changes, the name Evandale was adopted in 1836, and declared a municipality in 1865. The picturesque township and countryside inspired the early Australian landscape artist John Glover. A memorial statue of John Glover may be seen at Falls Park, and his work is celebrated with an annual Glover Art Prize, worth $30,000 and held each March. Evandale is also the birthplace of the most highly decorated allied soldier in World War 1, Lt Col Harry Murray VC, CMG, DSO and Bar. His deeds are celebrated with a statue in the gardens at the end of Trafalgar Lane.
Those visiting Evandale can find short-term parking at Falls Park, cnr Logan Rd & Huxables Lane. Although sites are free, permits are required, and these can be obtained online.
