Callington is a small rural township on the Bremer River, located approximately 55 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. Callington was surveyed in 1848, at which time John Kiernan noticed copper in the rocks. Little copper was mined at first, however mining restarted years later in the Bremer mine and did better. Despite some good years, the mine eventually fell into liquidation in 1870 due to low copper prices.
RV travellers passing through town will find short term parking at Callington Recreation Reserve, the Funky Horse Paddock. Parking is available for self-contained vehicles at a rate of $10 per vehicle per night. Stays of up to 48 hours are welcome, and access to water is available. A dump point is also available at the recreation grounds.
Callington is an enjoyable little stay for those travelling to or from Adelaide. During a visit to Callington, take some time to breath in some fresh air on the Mount Barker Summit Walking Trail. There’s a lookout and picnic area near the summit that makes for a great stop on the 500m return walk.
