Miles is a small town located in the Western Downs region of Queensland, 340 kilometres west of Brisbane and is an ideal stopping place for travellers heading west to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame or north to the Great Barrier Reef. Founded in 1884, the township was formally known as Dogwood Crossing. In 1878 the railway from Brisbane ran into trouble crossing Dogwood Creek and the delay meant that railway workers settled in the area. The township began to develop, dairy farms were established, shops and pubs were built. These new services meant that the town became valued as a supply route to the west. Later it was renamed in honour of local Member for Parliament and Minister for Railways, William Miles.

Visitors to Miles can find short and long term parking at Gil Weir Campground, where travellers have the option to stay up to 72 hours.  

Miles has a rich historical past which has been preserved for public education and enjoyment. At the eastern end of the town you will find The Miles Historical Village, an accurate recreation of a Queensland country town's main street at the turn of the century. There are more than 20 historic buildings, including a hospital, cafe, bank, post office and bakery. Miles is the centre of a native wildflower region extending north to the Great Divide. Travellers to Miles in September will witness the beauty of the wildflower season, and are urged to stay around for the Beef, Bells and Bottle Tree Festival.
