Monto is a small rural township of approximately 1300 residents, located 497 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. The town was a fully planned soldier and pioneer settlement town proclaimed in 1924 as part of the Land Development Scheme. Today, many impressive heritage buildings remain, including the Shire Hall with its classic art deco design. Monto maintains a diverse farming industry including beef cattle, Lucerne growing, pig production, grain, timber and dairying.
The Monto Community Rest Area on Newton Street allows parking for up to 72 hours for a fee of $5 per vehicle, per night. A dump point, potable water, bins, toilets, covered seating and BBQ facilities are all provided at the site.
Visitors to Monto will find its natural surrounding beauty the main attraction. 12 kilometres north of Monto is the Cania Gorge National Park. The gorge showcases dramatic caves, gullies and sandstone cliffs, and offers walking trails that range from 300m to a 5.6 kilometre circuit. Lake Cania is an ideal spot for recreational fishing, and is well stocked with Australian bass, yellow belly and silver perch.
