Peterborough - SA RVFT

Peterborough (or Petersburg as it was known until 1918) is a historic railway town on the western edge of the Flinders Ranges, 253km north of Adelaide. The town’s greatest claim to fame is that it is one of only two places in Australia where three railway gauges meet (the other is Gladstone). This was the result of different state governments being unable (or unwilling) to agree on a standard railway gauge. Peterborough developed relatively late in the history of South Australia, but by 1880 the Petersburg Hotel and the local post office had been erected and the following year the rail link from Adelaide was completed. The change of the town's name occurred during WW1 when anti-German sentiment was so strong that the Nomenclature Act insisted that all German-sounding names be changed.

Visitors to Peterborough can find casual parking, as well as potable water and a dump point along Don Ferguson Drive, and short-term parking can be found at Peterborough Rest Area East, Wilmington-Ucolta Rd. There is no fee to stay here. Bins are available and pets on a lead are permitted.

While in town, take a stroll through the ten acre Dragons Rest Habitat Garden and keep an eye out for the large diversity of plants and animals. Other features include scrap metal creatures, ponds, a kitchen garden and topiary. Take in a full panoramic view of Peterborough and its surroundings from the observation deck in Greg Duggan Nature Reserve, which also offers easily-accessible walking trails.
