Darlington Point is a small town on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River in the Riverina district of western New South Wales. Located 631 kilometres west of Sydney and 33 kilometres south of Griffith, the township is 4 kilometres from the Sturt Highway, along the Kidman Way. The unique river environment with its beautiful river red gums is a haven for animal and birdlife. Darlington Point was established in 1864 as a river port and crossing on a bend in the Murrumbidgee River where road and river traffic converged. In 1876 the steamer company McCulloch and Co. established a wool receiving store, a general store and erected a small wharf. By 1880 the timber trade was booming with a high demand for railway timber. A lift bridge was built in 1905, joining the communities on either side of the river. The structure was replaced in 1979 by a concrete bridge. Part of the old bridge was reconstructed for the Australian Bicentenary celebrations and can now be found at the entrance to the Darlington Point Caravan Park.
Those visiting the town can find short- and long-term parking at Bunyip Hole Reserve Camping Area where a stay limit of 96 hours applies. A dump point and potable water can be found at the Lions Park, cnr Kidman Way & Darlington Street.
Darlington Point’s newest attraction is Altina Wildlife Park. The safari park offers horse drawn cart tours and boasts exotic animals such as the American Bison and Himalayan Tahr. Impressive historical buildings include three churches from 1892 and the Shire Hall built in 1922. The Darlington Spring Festival is held on the last Sunday in September.
