Birdsville is situated between the sands of the Simpson Desert and the gibber plains of Sturt’s Stony Desert. The town is home to the famous Birdsville Hotel and the Birdsville Races, which bring thousands of people to town in September each year. Previously known as Diamantina Crossing, Birdsville was renamed due to the diverse birdlife of the area. In town you can visit the Australian Inland Mission Hospital, the Birdsville Working Museum and the two art galleries. Near town, the attractions include the Simpson Desert, ‘Big Red’- the tallest sand dune of the Simpson, the old Diamantina Crossing and a Burke and Wills campsite. The Simpson Desert National Park is home to many mammals and reptiles and over 180 bird species. After a day’s sightseeing, take a picnic and go swimming at Pelican Point, the billabong near town.
Those visiting Birdsville can find short and long term parking at Diamantina River Reserve (Diamantina Development Road).
The Birdsville of today is a modern community offering travellers a general store, bakery, restaurants, medical clinic, auto services and a police station.
