Quilpie Shire in Queensland’s outback has it all – the magnificent natural diversity of the Channel Country and the beauty of boulder opal. Primary industries, opal mining, oil, and gas play a huge role in the economy, and sheep, cattle, fish and an array of birds and wildlife call the Shire home. The rugged landscapes provide endless opportunities for the photographer.
Quilpie, with a population of 654, is the service centre for the Shire, which covers 67,482 sq kilometres. It has all the necessities and many of the luxuries both visitors and locals require. Welcome to a lifestyle where golf is played at night in summer, where you will find an opal altar, lectern and font in the local church, and where the 33 metre swimming pool has free entry.
The Quilpie Visitor Centre includes a museum, where an interactive CD relives stories from the past as told by the direct descendants of the early pioneers. The Centre also features a gallery with various exhibitions each month by accomplished artists from far and wide, in addition to exhibitions of local art and craft.
After visiting the Information Centre try the Bulloo River Walk, visit St. Finbarr’s Church, fossick for opals, or climb Baldy Top. At the end of the day sit back and relax, maybe throw a line in, watch the striking sunset and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Call in to nearby Adavale, Eromanga and Toompine and enjoy the hospitality of these small communities. Adavale, dating back to 1880, was once the centre of the Adavale Shire, and Toompine is known as ‘the pub with no town’. See the Living History Centre Object Theatre in Eromanga and maybe enjoy a picnic in Opalopolis Park.
Perhaps the best part of your outback adventure will be the warm country hospitality offered by the people you meet. Quilpie Shire, in Queensland’s outback, is a place where characters share a yarn and people stop and say 'g’day'.
