Cowra is located in central NSW, approximately 310 kilometres west of Sydney, and is situated at the junction of the Mid Western and Olympic Highways, and Lachlan Valley Way. The town was established in 1849 and flourished once gold fever swept through the area. This boom contributed to the establishment of the many heritage buildings that stand in Cowra today. The Heritage Trail offers a leisurely walk past significant historical buildings, including the old federation-style court house, flourmill, gothic stone church and more. Cowra was also the location of the largest Prisoner of War Breakout in modern military history, and as a result, many attractions stand as a testimony to the war, including the Japanese and Australian War Cemeteries and the Japanese Garden. The Cowra Prisoner of War Campsite is one of the top heritage sites in NSW. Today tourists can walk through the camp ruins and view a short holographic presentation about the breakout at the POW theatre.

Lachlan Valley Way, opp Cowra VIC & McDonalds, allows short term parking for self-contained vehicles for up to 24 hours. Long term parking is located at Gooloogong Reserve, Mid Western Hwy, Gooloogong. Potable water and a dump point are situated in Edgell Park, Lachlan Valley Way, (Boorowa Rd), at the amenities block.

Across the road from the Visitor’s Centre is Lone Pine Park, featuring a tree propagated from a seed of the famous Lone Pine in Gallipoli - a perfect place to commemorate ANZAC Day. Cowra Civic Square houses the Australian World Peace Bell, which was erected as a symbol of the town’s commitment to international understanding. The Bell is made from melted down coins from the 103 member countries of the United Nations.
