Millmerran sits on the Gore Highway between Toowoomba and Goondiwindi, on the border of the Darling Downs and Western Downs regions of Queensland. The traditional owners of the area are the Kambuwal Aboriginal people. The name Millmerran is a derivative of an Aboriginal term for ‘lookout’, as there is high ground in the area that was used for that purpose.
The area started out in the 1700s as the vast sheep farm, Yandilla Station. In the late 1800s, land holdings became smaller and primary production changed to mixed farming, with cotton, grains, beef, dairy, poultry and honey production becoming some of the main industries.
Many fantastic murals depicting the history of the area are painted on the side of the buildings in town and on the water reservoir. The Millmerran Museum also has extensive displays from the area’s past. The museum is open regularly or can be opened at other times by arrangement.
Just out of Millmerran is the All Saints Anglican Church and historic cemetery, a walk through the adjoining cemetery is well worth the stop. South of town, on the Inglewood Road, is Mt Basalt. This unique geological and environmental landmark, featuring rare volcanic formations, offers a variety of walking trails and a lookout with spectacular views.
Annual events include the Australia Day celebrations, the Millmerran Show in February/March, fishing competitions, shooting competitions and camp drafts. The Australian Camp Oven Festival is a biennial event held in even numbered years, with activities such as camp oven cooking competitions, country music, apron competition, damper throwing, and billy boiling speed tests.
Millmerran offers a fascinating mix of experiences, sights and characters. Come along and experience the spirit of the Darling Downs through the town's unique attractions and festivals
