Gunnedah is located on the Oxley and Kamilaroi Highways in north-eastern New South Wales, 475 kilometres from Sydney and 75 kilometres from the nearest regional centre, Tamworth. The town is served by the daily Countrylink Xplorer service between Sydney and Moree. Situated on a sloping ridge above the Namoi and Mooki Rivers, Gunnedah is in the heart of the wheat belt and possesses the largest beef cattle selling centre in New South Wales. The wheat grain silos loom over the town, with wool, pigs, poultry, sheep, lucerne, barley, cotton, oilseeds and sorghum being other primary industries. Gunnedah sits upon one of New South Wales largest coal seams. The town also has a major abattoir, brickworks, livestock feed companies, a flour mill and saw mill.

Gunnedah is the ‘Koala Capital of the World,’ blessed with one of the largest and healthiest koala populations west of the Great Divide. Wild koalas are often seen sauntering from tree to tree or even crossing the main street! A visit to the Waterways Wildlife Park allows visitors an even closer encounter with koalas and other iconic Australian wildlife.

Gunnedah’s agricultural foundation is reinforced each August when 100,000 visitors flock to the town for Ag-Quip, the largest agricultural field days in the southern hemisphere, while the district’s rich rural heritage is preserved in the vast collection of equipment at the Rural Museum. This beauty of 'a land of sweeping plains' inspired Gunnedah’s favourite visitor, Dorothea Mackellar in much of her poetry and prose.

Visitors to Gunnedah are always pleasantly surprised with the diversity of attractions and events including Lake Keepit State Park, museums and galleries, bushwalking, golfing, sightseeing and tours.
