Railton is a small town located 20km inland from Devonport, on the north-west coast of Tasmania. The town was originally named Redwater Creek, and became Railton after the construction of the tramway line in the 1860s. Early settlers to the area, mainly farmers and timber workers, lived in slab huts and by the 1900s, Railton had a flourishing timber trade with two sawmills. The towns wide main street was originally built for the bullock teams making their way to the railway station to unload the produce and timber, while the cement works and lime works give an insight into the past of the town.

Railway Park which is located on The Esplanade, just off Foster Street, offers those with self-contained vehicles parking for up to 96 hours. Sites are free of charge, and visitors will have access to a dump point and potable water. 

Railton is a fantastic place to visit and immerse yourself in the rich history and culture that the town has on offer. The Looking Glass Cottage is a magical experience of fibre optic displays. The cottage houses many animated fibre optic lamps, Christmas trees and decorations and gift ideas from lava and glitter lamps. The Looking Glass Cottage also has the Visitor Information Centre, where free guided tours of the topiary can be arranged. The nearby streams and Mersey River offer trout and fly fishing and swimming.
