The small city of Burnie is located on the north-west coast of Tasmania and was settled in 1827. The port has always been at the heart of Burnie, connecting the region’s harvested natural resources and manufactured products (like pulp and paper) to the rest of the world. However, its industrial past came at an environmental cost, and since the early 1990s, Burnie has been in the process of transforming from this industrial past to a cleaner and more creative future, as the City of Makers. Places to visit are the Hellyer’s Road Distillery, where a uniquely Tasmanian single malt whiskey is made along with a range of blends and vodkas. Visitors can experience tours and tastings.

Leisure opportunities abound, with excellent beaches, parks and gardens in and around the city. And if you are planning to visit in the summer months expect long days with sunlight lasting up to 16 hours a day. Little penguins populate the rocky points at the end of West Beach and a stroll in Fernglade may reward you with an occasional glimpse of a platypus.
