Burnie - TAS RVFT

The small city of Burnie is located on the north-west coast of Tasmania and was settled in 1827. The port has always been at the heart of Burnie, connecting the region’s harvested natural resources and manufactured products (like pulp and paper) to the rest of the world. However, its industrial past came at an environmental cost, and since the early 1990s, Burnie has been in the process of transforming from this industrial past to a cleaner and more creative future, as the City of Makers. These days, boutique paper is made by hand at the Makers’ Workshop, a newly opened tourism centre located on the foreshore. The Makers’ Workshop is also home to Burnie’s Visitor Information Centre, a café, Cheese Shop, gallery and a retail area. Other places to visit are the Hellyer’s Road Distillery, where a uniquely Tasmanian single malt whiskey is made along with a range of blends and vodkas. Visitors can experience tours and tastings.

Cooee Point is the perfect place to park up for a few days while you explore Burnie. Cooee Point has access to a dump point, potable water, and you can obtain your parking permit from the Visitor Information Centre and rest for up to two days.

Leisure opportunities abound, with excellent beaches, parks and gardens in and around the city. And if you are planning to visit in the summer months expect long days with sunlight lasting up to 16 hours a day. Little penguins populate the rocky points at the end of West Beach and a stroll in Fernglade may reward you with an occasional glimpse of a platypus.
