Dongara is situated on the Irwin River approximately 350km north-west of Perth on the Brand Highway. It is the first town after leaving Perth at the end of the Indian Ocean Drive along Western Australia’s iconic Coral Coast region. Dongara’s twin town of Port Denison lies on the opposite side of the Irwin River and is the home to a successful rock lobster fishing fleet.

A charming coastal town Dongara offers beautiful beaches, boardwalks, and lookouts for viewing the estuary, flora and fauna. Visitors can enjoy scenic nature by kayaking through the river or bird watching in the hut along the river.

Stretch your legs by choosing one of the five Thungarra Trails or the Dongara Heritage Walk. One of the trails will guide you around the tranquil river where it is protected from the wind and shows off the fantastic bird life especially around the estuary. Flyers can be obtained from the visitors’ centre. 

You can also try your hand at fishing. Great fishing spots are on the jetty near the Big 4 Caravan Park or further down on the groin near the Obelisk, South Beach or near Seaspray Caravan Park. Whiting and Tailor are the main fish you may catch from the shore. No luck catching your own, raw local seafood is available for purchase from Seaz Denison Seafood or buy some fish and chips from the local fish and chip shop in Dongara or from the Port Store in Port Denison.

Dongara Town Oval offers 24-hour parking for self-contained travellers at a charge of $10 per vehicle. There is a free dump point available on-site and potable water is located nearby at the Port Denison Foreshore, opposite the Point Leander Drive & George Street intersection.

The town has plenty of services to stock up on for your travels and make sure you visit the Dongara Port Denison Visitor Centre to score yourself some local souvenirs.
