Pooncarie is a small town in south-west New South Wales, situated 1159 kilometres west of Sydney on the eastern side of the Darling River. The village was once a bustling port town, with paddle steamers lining the wharf. The original wharf site still exists, however little else remains of that period. Pooncarie is now a quaint, outback town with a tiny population of approximately 330.
The Pooncarie Port Pitstop serves the locals and passing through travellers as a café, convenience store and petrol station. Parking is allowed for up to 24 hours free of charge, with amenities onsite including showers, toilets, BBQs, bins and covered seating. Pets on a lead are permitted.
Pooncarie makes an ideal stopover when following the Darling River Run, or when continuing to the nearby Mungo National Park. Visit in October to witness the annual Pooncarie Cup Race Meeting, a unique outback racing experience, or check the dates for the next Pooncarie Field Day, held every two years.
