Donald - VIC RVFT

Donald is located on the Richardson River in Victoria and is 282 kilometres from Melbourne at the junction of Sunraysia Highway and Borung Highway. The district is part of the Murray Basin, which in volcanic times was an inland sea. A large quantity of salt still remains beneath the surface creating challenges for farmers. In the sea were islands of hard stone, which now appear as small hills. The town is named after William Donald, a Scottish pastoralist who first settled the area in 1844. The railway reached Donald in 1882 and for many years it was a mainstay of the local shopkeepers, as the regular wages of the railway workers kept them solvent while waiting for the ‘after harvest’ payments of the struggling selectors. Donald is a traditional cereal growing area for wheat and barley as well as prime lambs and wool.

Those visiting Donald can find short-term parking for up to 72 hours at the Byrne St Rest Area. Both the dump point and potable water can be found at Donald Caravan Park, 2 Corack Rd.

Granite Rocks Reserve is a popular attraction for visitors and great place to picnic, featuring an outcrop of large granite rocks overlooking a spectacular 360 degree view of the surrounding farmlands. Self-drive sight-seeing tour guides are available from the community centre. These drives visit local tourist attractions such as, Georgie’s Hut, Lake Gil Gil, Mt Jeffcott Flora Reserve and Jeffcott Range. Annual events include the Australian Off Road Racing in the first week of April, Donald Agricultural Show in October, and Donald Cup held in November.
