Mannum is set on the broad reaches of the Lower Murray, and is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway or the scenic route through Gumercha, Birdwood and Palmer.
Before settlers came to Mannum, the area was inhabited by the Narraltie Aborigines who lived in wurleys alongside the river. There are many explanations of the name ‘Mannum’, but the one favoured by the local Aboriginal community is ‘the place of many ducks’.
William Randell, romantic son of a pioneer pastoralist, fulfilled a lifelong dream when he launched a paddle steamer named Mary Ann at Noa-No on the Murray River in 1853. Randell later made the decision to move his river boat operation from Noa-No to the current site of Mannum; this act was instrumental in the founding of Mannum.
The Mannum Dock of River History Museum is located on the banks of the River Murray in the historic river port town of Mannum. The theme is set to guide visitors through a rich and colourful historic and cultural journey. A popular tourist attraction is a paddle steamer named Marion, which was built in 1897. The paddle steamer has now been restored to the glory days of the 1940s and visitors can inspect the vessel whilst moored at Arnold Park Wharf, or elect to take an extended River Murray cruise to soak up the experience of the traditional maritime way of life.
Haythorpe Reserve is the perfect location to park while you explore this beautiful town. With a dump point available and potable water not far away, why not stay four or five days and enjoy the tranquility and picturesque backdrop of the Murray River?
Mannum is a river destination with something for everyone, whether it’s fossicking for fossils, river scenery, or activities such as house boating or canoeing.
