Grenfell - NSW RVFT

Weddin Shire Council is based in Grenfell, which is in the Central West Region of New South Wales and is within two hours’ drive of Orange, Canberra, Wagga Wagga and Dubbo. Grenfell is one of four small villages which service the local agricultural communities within the Weddin Shire. Grenfell was a gold mining town first known as Emu Creek and renamed in honour of John Grenfell, Gold Commissioner at Forbes, who had been killed in 1866 by bushrangers. Grenfell had some of the richest gold bearing deposits in NSW, which attracted a number of bushrangers to the area. Ben Hall was a notorious bushranger responsible for the famous Eugowra hold up. Legend has it the haul of cash and gold is still hidden somewhere in the mountains! The Weddin Mountains National Park is located in close proximity to Grenfell and is a major tourist attraction. For the bird lovers, you will come across 12 marked trails ideal for bird observing throughout Weddin Shire, covering a wide variety of habitats and over 200 species.

The beautifully restored railway station in Grenfell hosts a dump point, potable water and short-term parking. This location is not only convenient, but the olde-world charm of the local buildings is truly remarkable.

The poet and story writer Henry Lawson was born on the nearby goldfields. On the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June every year, the town hosts The Henry Lawson Festival of Arts, which attracts thousands of visitors. The Festival is a celebration of local and national talent, with art, poetry and writing competitions, drawing entries from all over Australia. If you’re looking for something different to do, then this might just be the perfect long weekend to come to Grenfell and experience all that the town and surrounding areas have to offer.
