Coleambally is located 637 kilometres south-west of Sydney in the Riverina area of New South Wales. Coleambally can be accessed by road from Sydney and Canberra via the Hume Highway and Burley Griffin Way, and from Melbourne via the Hume Highway, Newell Highway and the Kidman Way. Coleambally is the newest town in NSW established as a result of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The town was designed to act as a centre for the surrounding irrigation area. The Coleambally Irrigation Area Scheme was started in the 1950s, with potential farmland being made available through a ballot system. Coleambally has beautiful bore watered gardens creating an ‘oasis on the plains’. The surrounding irrigated farmland produces a vast array of crops such as rice, maize, cotton and soybeans.
Coleambally's distinctive wine glass shaped water tower is a major feature and is located in the centre of town. At the base of the tower is a magnificent mosaic depicting the history of the local irrigation area. The Lions Park at the entrance of town is a welcoming rest area with BBQ and toilet facilities, as well as potable water and a dump point. A Bucyrus Dragline is featured in the Park; it is one of four machines imported from the United States to excavate the main irrigation channels in the early 1960s. Short term parking is located at Brolga Place, Shopping Centre car park, cnr Kingfisher Ave & Kestrel Rd, with stays up to 24 hours permitted.
Coleambally is a home to some of the most endangered species in Australia, the Bittern, Southern Bell Frog and it has many other species of native flora and fauna, so be sure to make Coleambally a priority when visiting the Riverina region of New South Wales.
