Hay is a quaint town situated halfway between Sydney and Adelaide, on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. The town has an extensive agricultural, cattle and sheep industry encompassing a wide area of land. The Visitors Centre has a range of information for your visit, including a Town Tourist Drive map and maps for a Heritage Walk and a Nature Walk taking in the local attractions. The place to visit is The Australian Shearers' Hall of Fame, where you will meet the shearers, shed hands, sheep and dogs. This hands-on experience is not to be missed. Hay has five museums to explore covering the diverse history of the area, from shearers and pastoralists to prisoners of war. Take a tour at Bishop's Lodge Historic House and enjoy the tranquillity of the Heritage Rose Garden.
Those visiting the area can find short and long term parking at the Hay Showground. Please note, fees will apply.
The town of Hay has an array of festivals and events being held all year, such as agricultural shows, outback festivals, rodeos and camp-drafting. All types of competitions from lawn bowls to sheep trials are contested. There are plenty of places to enjoy a meal, be it a restaurant, a club or a café, or as simple as a peaceful picnic on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River. For the wine connoisseur a visit to Ruberto's Winery is a must. For a friendly experience mixed with that country feel, don't drive past Hay.
