Narrabri is situated 560 kilometres north-west of Sydney on the Kamilaroi Highway and 560 kilometres south-west of Brisbane on the Newell Highway. The town's name, meaning 'forked waters', which derives from the language of the Kamilaroi tribe, who were the original occupants is an apt one. As you drive through Narrabri, along the highway you will notice the splintering of the waterways as you pass over the Namoi River, Narrabri Creek and, finally, the creek's sub-branch, Horse Arm Creek.
Those visiting Narrabi can find short and long term parking at Narrabri Showground, Wukawa St. Parking available at a cost of $15 per vehicle per night for an unpowered site and $22 per vehicle per night for a powered site on presentation of CMCA Membership to the Caretaker. A dump point can be found at Cameron Park, Cameron Street, and potable water at the Narrabri Visitor Information Centre.
Set against the backdrop of the Nandewar Ranges and on the banks of the Namoi River, Narrabri is an energetic regional centre offering a wonderful selection of shops, restaurants, museums and a large array of tourist attractions. These include the CSIRO Telescope, the old gaol and museum and a number of agricultural centres. Natural attractions include Mount Kaputar National Park, Sawn Rocks, sandstone caves and just to the south of town, the largest remnant temperate forest in eastern Australia, the Pilliga Forest. A visit to The Crossing Theatre, a 1,000 seat auditorium and cinema complex normally only found in larger Australian communities is well worth a look. The annual food and wine festival, Nosh on the Namoi, is held in Autumn each year. This event is the perfect opportunity to sample all the local produce while being entertained with live music
