Located at the mouth of the Leven River is Ulverstone, a coastal town supported by tourism and agriculture. Ulverstone was settled in 1840 by James Fenton, however due to a lack of accessibility to the town, development was limited until 1890 when a railway station was constructed. Ulverstone was once a popular sawmill operating town, and through years of wood chips falling into the soil, now boasts ideal potato farming land.
Located only 15 minutes west of Devonport on the Bass Highway, Ulverstone is Tasmania’s largest town. Just 20 minutes from the Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal, Ulverstone is on the north-west coast, surrounded by picturesque coastal parks and swimming beaches. An ideal location for just a few days, or a few weeks, and in only 90 minutes by car, you can arrive in Launceston or Cradle Mountain.
Ulverstone provides an abundance of scenic walks, patrolled beaches and recreational parks, as well as a variety of golfing and shopping destinations. Spectacular waterfalls and limestone caves can be found in the surrounding areas, as well as magnificent wildlife and bushwalking trails. The town boasts an average temperature of 21.5 degrees in January, and an enjoyable 13 degrees in June.
Ulverstone has a strong history; a War Memorial clock is located at the entrance of the town and is a true feature. As you walk through Shropshire Park, you will also notice Royal Australian Navy history inscribed into the footpath. If you have time whilst in town, be sure to enjoy some of the many activities on offer and drop in for a visit to Ulverstone Local History Museum.
Ulverstone became an RV Friendly Town™ in 2007 and has continued to show strong support for RV tourists, offering plenty of free parking. The town’s redevelopment has been impressive, with the introduction of a new basketball stadium, bridge, and wharf precinct.
