Corryong is located 120 kilometres east of Albury-Wodonga in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. The town lies close to the New South Wales border and is accessible by road along the Murray Valley Highway. Its location makes it the Victorian gateway to the New South Wales snowfields, including Thredbo Ski Village and the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Australian bush poet, Banjo Paterson, visited Corryong and shortly after wrote the now famous poem, The Man from Snowy River. It is claimed that the inspiration or the character in Paterson’s poem was local stockman, Jack Riley (born 1841). The Man from Snowy River Museum is a popular tourist destination that houses a unique collection of ski memorabilia and other local history.
