Campbell Town - TAS RVFT

Campbell Town is located on the Midland Highway halfway between Hobart and Launceston. The town was first established by Governor Macquarie in 1821 to be used as one of the four military garrison towns and probation stations between Hobart and Launceston. Sheep and cattle grazing properties were soon established in the district and the area then became renowned for its fine wool production.   Campbell Town today continues to be the primary service centre for the surrounding agricultural properties, as well as a highly popular stopping point for travellers on the Midland Highway. The town has a number of niche shops including a traditional lolly store, handmade leather goods, rich chocolates, a bookstore and many more.

The town’s wide, tree-lined streets are accommodating for recreational vehicles with ample parking in the centre of town on Commonwealth Lane. A dump point can be found on King Street, on the western side of High Street, and a potable water station can be located at War Memorial Oval on High Street also.  The serene Elizabeth River meanders by Campbell Town and the banks of the river offer superb locations for a shaded picnic or BBQ.

Less than 30 minutes from Campbell Town is Lake Leake, a premium fishing spot regularly stocked with brook and rainbow trout. A small camping area is available for self-contained vehicles with a chalet close by where meals are on offer.   While in town, a popular must-see is the Red Bridge; built by convicts (1836–1838) the Bridge contains in excess of one million locally fired bricks. This amazing feat of engineering, originally designed for horse drawn transport, now carries more than two million vehicles annually and has required very little maintenance since its resurrection.
