Whyalla is located 396km north-west of Adelaide and is the largest city in the Upper Spencer Gulf region. The town was founded in 1906 and was originally named Hummock Hill, and it was not until 1914 the town was renamed as Whyalla and was established as a port to ship iron. For a long time Whyalla was a steel and shipbuilding hub and is now experiencing a tourism renaissance based on its proud industrial history and natural phenomena, including the annual spawning of giant, luminescent cuttlefish each winter.
Those visiting Whyalla can find short term parking at Weerona Bay Football & Sports Club, Stuart Park, Cartledge Ave for $10 per vehicle per night. There are no other facilities available here and parking is limited to 7 days. A dump point and potable water can be located at Jubilee Park, Jenkins Ave.
Whyalla boasts a fabulous Mediterranean style climate that provides around 300 days of clear and sunny skies each year, making this city the perfect place to visit. Spend a lazy afternoon swimming or windsurfing at the local beach, or fishing from the nearby jetty. At low tide, walk out to the ‘blue line’ to search for crabs. A short drive from town is the beautiful Point Lowly Peninsula and Lighthouse - the oldest building in the area. You can experience the heritage of the area at the Whyalla Martime Museum, featuring the largest permanently land-locked warship in Australia, or take a fully guided tour of the vast OneSteel Whyalla steelworks. As the regional shopping centre for the area, Whyalla has all the facilities you would expect from a major shopping area, with service stations open 24 hours a day, a myriad of dining venues and many other facilities.
