Newman is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, approximately 1186km north of Perth and 9km north of the Tropic of Capricorn. A model mining town with an attractive centre, Newman serves two huge mines, one of which, Mt Whaleback, is now the largest open-cut iron ore mine in the world. The surrounding landscape is very picturesque with the blue, green and red colours of the outback, natural waterholes, ancient aboriginal art sites and an abundance of Australian flora and fauna.
Short-term parking is available at the Tourist Information Centre for 72 hours at a cost of $10 per vehicle per night. A dump point and potable water can also be found here.
Newman is a great place to visit, especially for RV travellers. Typical of mining towns, Newman is laid out with a core, where shopping and hotels are located, surrounded by residential areas, with more industrial activities on the outskirts. There are two supermarkets in town, two shopping plazas, three hotels, and three bars/restaurants outside of those contained in the hotels.
