Tambo is located along the Matilda Highway, halfway between Brisbane and Mount Isa. Established in 1860, Tambo is the oldest town in central west Queensland and has a rich history steeped in the wool and cattle industries. There are many historic buildings and beautiful gardens about, and the best way to familiarise yourself with the town is to undertake the relaxing Coolibah Walk along the Barcoo River. Here you will see a number of waterholes, as well as the site of the 1927 Qantas crash, but if it’s birdlife you want to observe, it’s best to take the walk in the early morning or late afternoon.
Those visiting Tambo can find short-term parking at Stubby Bend Campsite, located on Racecourse Road. Parking is free of charge and is limited to 72 hours. Vehicles must be self-contained.
There is so much to see and do in Tambo, and everything you need to know about the area can be found at the information centre, within the Grassland Gallery complex. Take time to meet and greet the locals at a number of town eateries, or compete in a friendly game of tennis, golf or another popular local sport. For the more adventurous, Wilderness Way is a 320 kilometre round trip that starts and ends in Tambo. Yellow poles indicate points of interest, such as the cemetery (which contains graves of early settlers), Salvator Rosa National Park, and the Lantern Cave. The surrounding scenery is stunning – complete with cliffs, gorges, and unique wildflowers.
