Keith is a small farming town in the south-east of South Australia, 225 kilometres from Adelaide. Located at the intersection of the Dukes Highway and the Riddoch Highway, Keith is known as the gateway to the Limestone Coast. The township of Keith was proclaimed in 1889 with agriculture as its base. The region was once known as the Ninety Mile Desert however thanks to modern farming techniques it has been transformed. The underground aquifer allows for significant irrigation to take place in the area. Local artist James Darling created a water feature titled ‘Circle Work’ in the town centre. The art piece celebrates the vital cycle of water through the Australian landscape. Keith is known as the Lucerne capital of Australia. Herds of sheep and cattle make up the majority of livestock while crops of wheat, barley, small seeds and olives are also grown.
Visitors to Keith can find short and long-term parking at Keith Showground, cnr Emu Flat Rd & Showground Pde. Sites are available for $10 per person per night and stays are limited to 72 hours. Permits are obtainable from the caretaker & include access to toilets, potable water & showers.
Keith has many attractions including museums, vineyards, wineries, art galleries, parks and gardens. Mount Monster and Ngarkat Conservation Parks are home to western grey kangaroos and emu as well as more than 120 species of birds. A number of walking trails provide close encounters with the wildlife. Panoramic views from Mount Monster showcase the spectacular beauty of the surrounding areas.
