Texas is located on the Bruxner Highway, along the banks of the Dumaresq River in southern QLD. The town was originally established on the river flats, but was relocated after several major floods, although remnants of the original township still exist for visitors to explore. The renovated and restored Texas Rabbit Works Factory was officially opened on 13 May 2017, this largely intact example of the struggle to control the rabbit plague and the industry that developed as a result is a must-see on your visit to Texas. An excellent array of artworks is on display at the Texas Regional Art Gallery, and the Heritage Centre and Tobacco Museum house a large collection of local memorabilia. Then there is the beautiful Pecan Park, which contains trees donated in 1988 by the people of Texas, USA (Texas Queensland’s namesake). For fantastic 360 degree views of Texas, take a trip to Goat Rock, which is located within a working sheep property. Campsites and picnic facilities are set in natural bushland surrounded by large granite boulders, and you can participate in everyday farm activities and tours of the property. You’ll never go hungry at Goat Rock, with true country style cooking available at ‘The Shed’.
Visitors to Texas can find short and long term parking at Dumaresq River Camping Area, also known as Les (Jingles) Myer Rest Area and there is 14 day time limit to stay here. Both potable water and a dump point are located at the council depot, situated in Flemming Street.
Texas is central to a number of interesting attractions in surrounding regions. The town is only one hour drive from Goondiwindi. Limestone Caves and MacIntyre Falls can be found at the nearby town of Ashford, NSW, and a number of national parks are also ideal day trips from Texas.
In September each year, Texas comes alive for a week of country music and bush poets with walk-up artists welcome from Monday to Thursday and invited artists performing on the main stage from Friday to Sunday.
