Avoca is located in the heart of the Pyrenees Shire, in central west Victoria. Gold was first found in Victoria in 1849 in the Pyrenees State Forest near Avoca, and by June the following year, Avoca, with a population of 16,000 was regarded as one of Victoria’s important gold rush districts. Today gold still attracts fortune seeking prospectors to the district; however most visitors stop over in the Pyrenees region to sample their renowned wine and enjoy magnificent state forests. There are over 30 cellar doors providing a large variety of wines from savoury, spicy reds to sparkling wine, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Avoca Riverside Park, Dundas Street, offers visitors short-term parking for up to 48 hours. A dump point and potable water can be found outside Avoca Caravan Park in Faraday Street.
The township is surrounded by mountain ranges and is the perfect environment for bike riding and bushwalking. With the backdrop of the Pyrenees Ranges and the Avoca River running through the centre of town, Avoca is an idyllic rural town to visit. Many of the buildings lining the streets today are still in their original condition with the gorgeous main street maintaining a historic façade that harkens back to the gold rush days. There is ample parking along their impressive divided main street and the modern amenities and services will impress travellers. Cafes, specialty shops and galleries now line the main street, creating an excellent stopping point before heading out to the many attractions. Just outside the township of Avoca, you can escape to the Pyrenees State Forest where you can sit around a campfire under a clear sky. One of the more popular locations is the Waterfalls Picnic Ground which is the perfect setting to rest your RV, with walking tracks and 4WD tracks to lead you in and through the State Forest.
