Balaklava is located 92 kilometres north of Adelaide, in the mid north region of South Australia and is situated on the banks of the Wakefield River. The town came into existence in 1849 as one of the many stopover points on the route from the Burra copper fields to Port Wakefield. The first settlers in Balaklava were James and Mary Dunn, who built Dunn's Hotel on the Balaklava-Hoyleton Road. Large grain stores were built in the early days on the tram way from Hoyleton to Port Wakefield intended to encourage farmers to settle in the region. Today the town is economically driven by wheat and sheep production. 

Visitors to Balaklava can find short and long-term parking at Balaklava Caravan Park. Sites are $21.00 per vehicle per night. Access to power is NOT included, however access to the BBQ and kitchen is, as well as the dump point. Potable water is obtainable from Rally Park, located on Whitwarta Rd. 

There is so much to do in Balaklava for the RV traveller. Popular attractions include the historic old courthouse at Balaklava, built in 1913, that has been converted into an art gallery housing crafts, gifts and the works of local artists. The Agricultural Museum houses a collection of vintage farm tractors, tillage and harvesting implements, and stationary engines. Starting in Elizabeth Street, the Lions Walking Trail follows the Wakefield River for approximately 2.5 kilometres and is popular with residents and visitors alike. The town hosts an annual Balaklava Cup horse racing carnival in August which attracts approximately 12,000 spectators from across the region who come to enjoy quality racing, fashion, food and wine. The Agricultural Show in September is another major event showcasing the regions achievements in agriculture, equestrian and arts.
