Hughenden, situated on the Flinders Highway and the Flinders River, is the hub of the mid north-west of Queensland. It is predominantly a grazing area, with cattle properties to the north and sheep grazing to the south. The town has many attractions, with four national parks, gem fields, mountainous volcanic basalt country, sweeping black soil plains and rich fossil dinosaur areas. The most famous of these areas, Porcupine Gorge, has been carved out of a basalt lava-flow by Porcupine Creek, giving beautiful soft colours to the walls towering 150 metres over the water. The Gorge offers camping, bird watching and swimming, and a diverse range of flora and fauna live amongst the brilliantly coloured sandstone rocks. Kooroorinya Falls Nature Reserve is another great spot for fishing, camping, bushwalking and swimming. The Flinders Discovery Centre on Gray Street is also the Visitor Information Centre. It has an excellent exhibition of dinosaur fossils from around the world as well as fossils from the local area. ‘Mutt’, a life size, full-bodied Muttaburrasaurus model, is situated in the middle of town on the two main incoming roads to Hughenden.

Visitors to Hughenden can find short-term parking at Hughenden RV Parking Area on Stansfield Street. There is no fee to stay here however, vehicles must be self-contained and a 1 week time limit applies. Potable water and a dump point are also located the RV Parking Area as well as at McLaren Street, (outside Ergon Energy depot). 

Hughenden is a typical larger country town and is just the place to rest and replenish your supplies while taking your time exploring the region.
