Kyabram is located between Echuca and Shepparton, in the centre of a rich irrigation district of the Goulburn Valley. It is a substantial rural town, which has proven attractive to large numbers of retirees. Brought to life by one of the state's irrigation projects, the district is a major producer of fruit, agriculture and dairy products. Local industries include a jam, conserve and topping factory, clothing manufacturers and container production. The town takes its name from the Aboriginal word for thick forest, but the native bush these days is largely confined to the magnificent Kyabram Fauna Park.
Those visiting Kyabram can find short term parking at Kyabram Mural Picnic Area, Tulloh St. There are no fees to stay here and parking is limited to 24 hours. Visitors can find a dump point and potable water at Kyabram Fauna Park on Lake Road.
Set on 55ha, the Kyabram Fauna Park houses extensive wetlands and lakes; whose waterfowl can be viewed from an observation tower and a waterfowl viewing hide. The Park exhibits 600 Australian Native Fauna and has introduced more than 6,000 native trees and plants. Fauna can be viewed in the heated reptile house which features 'Getcha' a salt water crocodile, a magnificent walk-thru aviary, numerous enclosures and a vast open range. Animal species that can be seen include the Parma wallaby, Red, Eastern and Kangaroo Island Kangaroos, Alpine dingoes, Tasmanian devils, Wombats (Forest & Southern Hairy-nosed), Echidnas, Emus, Koalas, and Cape Barren geese. A Koala 'petting' exhibit is currently under construction. The Park is also guardian to a cottage built in 1867 for French adventurer Theodore Hazleman, who sailed the high seas as a cabin boy and survived the American Civil War before coming to Australia.
