Kerang is a rural town located 25km inland from the Murray River, just south of the New South Wales border, between the historic Murray River border town of Swan Hill and the agricultural community of Cohuna. Kerang's symbol is a flying ibis. The area around Kerang is dotted with lagoons and lakes and is believed to have the most populous ibis rookeries in the world, with an estimated 200,000 ibis using the area for breeding each year, along with many other waterbirds.

Those visiting Kerang can find short-term parking at Kerang Turf Club, located on Park Rd. There is no fee to stay here, however, vehicles must be self-contained. Pets are permitted on leads, and mobile coverage is available. The dump point and potable water are both to be found at Kerang Saleyards, Markets Rd.

Kerang is a wonderful place to visit, especially for RV travellers. There are a number of specialty shops within town, as well as two supermarkets and a variety of eateries. Kerang's Visitor Information Centre can be found at the Lester Smith Lookout Tower, located at the corner of Wellington Street and Shadforth Street. The tower was built in 1883 as a water storage and offers panoramic views of the area from the viewing area at the top.
