Blackall is located on the Matilda Highway approximately 1,100 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. Blackall was discovered in 1846 by the explorer Major Thomas Mitchell who described the area as ‘the finest and most extensive pastoral region he had ever found’. When visiting town, be sure to make your first stop the Blackall Visitor Information Centre on Shamrock Street, which has a wide range of information on the local area. The Aquatic Centre has an artesian spa and 50 metre swimming pool set in tropical surroundings and a soak in the spa is a great way to relax after a day of sightseeing. Blackall has an extensive collection of features that offer history, culture and reflections of Australia’s pioneer heritage such as the Black Stump, Jackie Howe - legendary shearer and the Blackall Woolscour. Used in 1887 for surveying purposes, the Black Stump became famous when the term ‘beyond the Black Stump’ was coined to describe a remote outback location.
Barcoo River Camp offers visitors parking for up to 72 hours; a permit fee can be acquired for just $10.00 from the Visitors Information Centre. Pets on a leash are accepted and there is also access to potable water and a dump point.
The tree lined main street, the typical Aussie pubs, and relaxed atmosphere give Blackall that great country town feel and make it a wonderful place to stop and stay for a while.
