Young - NSW RVFT

Young is situated in the south-west slopes of NSW and is widely known as the ‘cherry capital of Australia’. The town was first settled in 1826 and has grown from a sheep station into a thriving regional centre. The discovery of gold in the area in 1860 was a catalyst in the development of Young and the surrounding areas. This discovery brought 20,000 miners to the area, 2,000 of whom were Chinese. The European miners resented the Chinese, and in 1861 a series of riots took place. As a result of the riots at Lambing Flat, the Chinese Immigration Restriction Act was passed by parliament in November 1861. This Act was the forerunner of the White Australia Policy. Young is also centrally located in the ‘Hilltops’ Wine and Food Region. The area is recognised for producing quality cool climate wines, excellent local foods and offering an authentic country experience. The National Cherry Festival takes place every year in December and features a street parade, the Cherry Festival Ball, heritage train rides and a regional farmer’s market, amongst other things.

Those visiting Young, can find short and long term parking at Young Showground, situated in Boorowa-Murringo Rd. Visitors will also locate a dump point and potable water here. Whilst visiting Young, all the mobile traveller’s needs are catered for, with a plethora of cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, hotels, sporting clubs and vehicle repair shops. There is lots of parking available at the railway station in Lovell Street and at the showground, which also has a dump point. The Visitor Information Centre, located at the railway station, has brochures on all the local attractions, and houses the Burrangong Art Gallery.

With its rich history and unique attractions, Young is a great place to visit and offers something for everyone.
