George Town is a large town located in north-east Tasmania, on the mouth of the Tamar River. The town was originally named after King George III and is one of the oldest European settlements in Australia. Whilst in town, discover the maritime history of the region by visiting the Low Head Pilot Station and Maritime Museum, Australia's oldest continuously operating pilot station. The Bass & Flinders Centre houses the replica sloop, the Norfolk, along with other vessels. Bass & Flinders sailed the Norfolk through Bass Strait and around Van Diemen’s Land, proving it was an island. A little further along is Low Head Lighthouse, with panoramic views of the peninsula, Tamar Valley, estuary, surf and river beaches.

The George Town Visitor Information Centre offers short-term parking for up to 24 hours. Stays are available for $12 per vehicle per night, where guests are to leave money in an envelope at the VIC. Access to the dump point and potable water are included with this rate.

For a truly unique holiday experience, head to the George Town area, which has something for everyone. Visit the George Town Watch House, which features a model village of early George Town, or take in the stunning views from the Mt George Lookout. You can purchase a George Town Historical Attractions Pass from the Visitor Information Centre on Main Road, which gives discounted entry to the Low Head Maritime Museum, Bass & Flinders Centre and the Watch House. For an up close look at the unique wildlife of the area, take a Fairy Penguin twilight tour of Low Head, or alternatively, enjoy a river cruise, a trip to a fur seal colony, fishing or a dive charter. George Town is also part of the Tamar Valley Wine Route, with wine tasting, tours, and cellar door sales available year round. You can then end the day with some fresh strawberries and cream at the Hillwood Berry Farm.
