Portland is a historic mining town, located 163 kilometres east of Sydney on the Great Western Highway. The area is surrounded by some of the most outstanding natural beauty to be found, being close to the Wollemi and Gardens of Stone National Parks. Portland is famed as ‘The town that built Sydney’ due to the Portland Cement Works, the first cement works in Australia which opened in 1902.
Camping for RVs is available for up to 72 hours at Kremer Park, on Lime Street. There is no cost to camp, and a dump point, potable water, toilets and bins are conveniently provided.
While in Portland, the Town Common is an ideal spot for a picnic, with 650 acres of natural bushland. Or perhaps wander the streets of Portland to explore old ware shops and galleries. The Charlie Pinch Museum, also worth visiting, showcases an interesting collection of Australian memorabilia.
