Bordertown is located adjacent to Tatiara Creek, on the Dukes Highway between Adelaide (280 kilometres) and Melbourne (450 kilometres) and is known as the gateway to South Australia’s south-east. The town was founded in 1853 following its siting as the half-way depot for the Gold Escorts that occurred between Adelaide and the Victorian Goldfields. Today it is a prosperous rural community with 2,445 residents - the main industries include an abattoir which processes lamb, small-seed cleaning of crops grown in the district (including canola and lucerne) and heavy transport. Poocher Swamp is a favourite recreational spot for picnics, boating, fishing, yabbying and canoeing. You can try a round of golf at the Bordertown Golf Course or visit the Bob Hawke Gallery in the Tatiara Civic Centre. A bronze bust of Bordertown-born Bob Hawke, Australia’s Prime Minister from 1983 to 1991, takes pride of place at its entrance.
Those visiting Bordertown can find short-term parking at Bordertown Recreation Lake, off Winter Rd. Sites are available free of charge and a dump point is located on-site. Please keep in mind that stays are limited to 72 hours. Potable water is obtainable at Tolmer Park in North Terrace, adjacent to Foodland.
There is so much to do and see when visiting Bordetown, so why not start off your trip by taking a walk around the 4.5 hectare wildlife park to see the colony of white kangaroos and learn about the breeding program? You can also see western grey kangaroos and peacocks and a variety of other birdlife. Other attractions include the Recreation Lake, Poocher Swamp, the Historic Drive and Clayton Farm, where you can reflect over what farm life was like over a century ago.
