Atherton is a rustic country town, located just 94 kilometres south-west of Cairns; with beautiful lakes, waterfalls, rich red soil and tropical rainforest, Atherton feels like a world away. The town itself is ideally situated as a base to explore most places of interest in the Tablelands area and is the major service centre for the region. The area has a number of natural attractions such as the Curtain Fig Tree, Millaa Millaa Falls, Nyleta Wetlands, Mt Hypipamee (a unique crater), crater lakes and amazing rock formations. The Crystal Caves are another must see. Don a miner’s helmet and explore the underground cavern, which is home to the world’s largest amethyst geode, The Empress of Uruguay, weighing 2.7 tonnes. Other activities include a trip to Chinatown, the Bat Hospital or Gallo’s Dairyland, as well as numerous opportunities for bushwalking, birdwatching, marsupial spotting, hot air ballooning, horse riding and water sports.

Those visiting the Atherton region can find short-term parking at the Lions Park, which is situated in Irvine Street, Kairi. There is no fee to stay here, however a 24 hour time limit applies.
