Deloraine is an historic town that is located midway between Launceston and Devonport and is situated on the banks of the beautiful Meander River. It is surrounded by rolling green hills, hedgerows and working farms, and sits at the foothills of the Great Western Tiers mountain range, which forms the northern edge of the World Heritage Central Plateau. The town was settled in the early 1800’s and blossomed through the ‘golden fifties’ due to successful grazing and agriculture on the large estates surrounding the town. Today, this bustling rural centre is Tasmania’s largest inland town and is a major art and craft centre. Many of the town’s colonial buildings have found new life as galleries, craft centres, museums and restaurants. Along the river, there are well-tended park and garden areas with pleasant walks, sculptures, and informative signs relating to the history and the attractions of the town.
The Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre is at the top of the main street. It is the place to go for information on things to see and do in the surrounding areas. Incorporated into the centre is Yarns Artwork in Silk and the Deloraine Folk Museum part of which is an 1850’s Georgian Inn. Or you may prefer cycling on Meander Valley’s unique Great Cycling Trails, skiing on Ben Lomond, or wandering through historic farming properties such as Woolmer’s Estate. Every November, Deloraine hosts the ‘Tasmanian Craft Fair’, which showcases the works of the diverse and talented local artisans. This has become the largest working craft fair in Australia, attracting over 30,000 visitors over a four day period. Visitors will find all the services they need in Deloraine, including health services, plenty of shopping and banking facilities, vehicle repairs and numerous eateries. Deloraine is a delightful rural town and is a great base for visiting the surrounding areas and local visitor attractions
