Windorah is located in Central West Queensland and is situated 35km downstream from where the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers join. The town was established in the 1880s by the Whitman brothers and has a small population of just 80 people. Windorah’s main industry is sheep and cattle grazing, which is due largely to the abundance of Mitchell Grass and other herbage that is available. Featuring a waterhole of about 19 kilometres in length and up to ten metres in depth, Windorah is a fantastic spot for those who enjoy a spot of fishing and birdwatching.
Coopers Creek Camp Area has free camping with a negotiable stay limit. Access to toilets, shade and picnic tables are also available at his great site. Both a dump point and potable water can be found at Quilpie Windorah Rd, Windorah.
Those visiting the region are encouraged to explore the red sand hills of Windorah, a sight that will truly welcome you to the great Australian outback. The perfect time to visit the sand hills is at sunset, with a glass of wine in hand, taking in the panorama of the starlit sky.
