Sorell is located 26 kilometres east of Hobart, 13 kilometres from Cambridge and 30 kilometres from Dunalley, and is at the crossroads of the East Coast Escape and the Convict Trail touring routes. It is a great base for the Southern Beaches Touring Route and the wealth of other nearby country region touring options available to explore. The town was named in 1821 after Lieutenant Governor William Sorell, (Governor of Van Diemen’s Land from 1817-1824) and was known as Tasmania’s most important grain centre. In 1874 Sorell became known as the gateway to the east coast of the Tasman Peninsula and has remained a popular service centre for local farms, light industry and its growing suburbs.
Visitors to Sorell can find short-term parking at Pembroke Park Rest Area in Montagu Street. A permit is required and will cost $15 per vehicle per night, or five nights for $30. Permit available from council chambers, 47 Cole Street, between 8am & 5pm Mon–Fri. Alternatively, a permit can be obtained on-site where you can deposit fees and forms into an on-site security box. Pembroke Park provides potable water and an on-site dump point.
Attractions within Sorell include bird watching at the Orielton Lagoon Conservation site, which is an internationally recognised habitat for migratory birds. You can also pick your own seasonal stone and berry fruit at the Sorell Fruit Farm where the annual Cherry Blossom Festival is held during September and October, or enjoy some wine tasting at the Orani Vineyard.
